|Not everyone is lucky enough to be blessed with a large bathroom, but that does not mean you canít make the best use of the room you have. The bathroom is a place of relaxation for many, so you want it to be a place where you enjoy spending time.
Of course there are other reasons why you want to give your bathroom a more spacious feel. You want it to be an impressive room that draws admiration from visitors. Your bathroom is also one of the major selling points if you are putting your home on the market. Giving an impression of room could add to the selling price. There are many ways in which you can add a roomier feel to your bathroom, and you donít have to spend a huge amount of money to do it.
Think about your bathing and shower choices
A traditional bathroom suite can take up a lot of space in a small room; but you do have options. Making use of the corners of your bathroom is a great idea. These spaces are often neglected, but the great thing about having a corner shower is that it releases a lot of wall space which automatically gives the illusion of expanding the dimensions of the room.
Another option is a wet room, which removes barriers such as shower stalls, and creates an open plan environment, providing an airier feel to the space. Even if you choose to install a shower screen to prevent the entire area from getting wet, you still have a more efficient use of space.
If you are a traditionalist then donít worry, the range of compact bathroom suites, available in a variety of space saving shapes, are an option for you.
Go vertical with your storage
One problem which many people encounter if their home has a small bathroom, is the lack of storage. It is often a dilemma; do you make sure you have enough storage and lose valuable space, or do you put up with the lack of storage which can be a real nuisance. One problem is that people tend to think horizontally, so a good deal of the higher wall space is left completely unused.
Custom shelving is an excellent option, as it can be designed specifically to the dimensions of your wall, and you can stack the shelves vertically, reducing their horizontal length, so that the room does not look as cluttered.
You can also think a little more creatively with your storage ideas. Many people find it necessary to have vanity cupboards in the bathroom, to store beauty items, and possibly hairdryers. You may always think of the traditional floor standing units, but you have other options. There are a myriad of different wall mounted vanity units available, in a variety of shapes, sizes, colours and finishes, to suit the interior of your bathroom.
Another item of décor, that is also practical, and an effective provider of the illusion of space, is a mirror. A floor to ceiling mirror not only reflects your space, giving it a roomier feel, it can also be a plus if you are getting dressed in the room and you want to check out your look.
Illuminated bathroom mirrors add to the feeling of depth and space, and are also an excellent secondary light source for when you are relaxing in the tub, and you donít want the starkness of a main light.
You need to think carefully about where you position your mirror, and what it is going to reflect. A mirror positioned across from a window creates a double window effect, and reflects the light. A mirror situated opposite a wall of cabinets may not have the optimum effect.
Donít forget that you donít have to spend a lot of money on a large and lavish mirror; it is possible to create an excellent mirrored effect of depth using several smaller mirrors, and it can be a real décor talking point.
Decorate for space
A great way of creating the illusion of increased area is to opt for a flowing neutral colour scheme. You can use tones of the same neutral shade from the floor, right up the walls and across the ceiling. This limits the boxed in feel that can sometimes occur if block colours are used.
If you want to add a pop of colour you can use selected coloured tiles on one feature wall, or as a backsplash area. Another way to add colour, and to improve the air quality, is to use plants in the room.
You can see that having a small bathroom does not necessarily have to be a hindrance. If you use your creativity you can make it into an impressive space where itís a pleasure to relax after a long hard day.
